I've been behind a parts counter pretty much all the time since March 1984. Partially it IS finding help that hasn't played the do it yourself brain chemistry game, and sometimes the parts person is held in so low esteem that they don't get compensated well and find other work. Also many customers are not even sure what the have, not every Ford tractor from '53 up is a Jubilee, or ask for parts for a John Deere B where about the only thing the same between a '35 and a '51 is the green and yellow paint. Then there is the problem with people calling the same part different names (share-point, nut-burr, etc.). It was easier in the paper catalog days as you could write the customers serial number on the front of the book. That is why I have parts books for all my equipment and just take the person in a list. There was a poem about parts people from long ago, if I can find it I will post it.
