This is about the same thing I do. I take a manual charger I found in an old storage room, I'd say from early 2000's and will hook that up to any battery below 8 volts for about half and hour, then quickly switch over to the auto charger. Normally the battery will hold a charge above 8 volts long enough for me to hook up and plug in the auto charger and it'll kick in. Done this on 4 or 5 batteries no problem.
