"Helped" the neighbor put in silage when I was 5 or so (pushed the grass around with a pitchfork- he gave me a quarter at the end of the day- pretty big money in 1953!). Seems like their wagon had a back gate that swung sideways. Canvas attached at the bottom of the wagon in the back, went forward and up the front, was gathered at the top of the front when filling. To empty, un-gather the canvas over the top of the load, attach at the top of the back where there was a gear head motor. Start motor, it pulls the canvas so the load slides out the back.
