Hot exhaust aimed at chain-- but probably a lot of hot oil in the exhaust that would help lubricate it. think of old Harley before 1936(?)- didn't have return oil pump, oil spun around crankcase and exited after few passes out exhaust- or dribbled on road or weeped out valve spring area that wasn't covered until knuckleheads (still weeped some). Splash lube common- think of IHC F20, 10-20 with light smoking exhaust about normal. Maserati might be another agriculture maker that got into sports cars-- Ferrari article had reference to broken transmissions on early Ferrari's using Fiat car types, Maserati demonstrated his transmission wouldn't break, Ferrari said wouldn't use farm tractor parts so Maserati made a V8 with some of his factory tractor parts, transmission and rear axle with gears from earth mover/tractor, live axle with agriculture implement brakes, went racing just to annoy Enzio Ferrari (and get some publicity). Longer than sprint races the Ferrari's always took lead for first few laps, out handle Maserati's on curves-- but after 100 miles or so Maserati's were in lead because Ferrari's rear axles or transmission were broken and if not then brakes were acting up, sometime clutches slipping. Ferrari found other than Fiat car parts to use- some from FIAT truck line or other strong racing parts maker or made his own- no longer a hot rodded Fiat. Maserati GTs had reputation for reliability over Ferrari in Italian- favored by wealthy vineyard owners and farm estate owners and joke was they wanted fast tractor that their usual ag implement maker had in stock, knew it would last- and some would have a Agriculture license plate in some countries that made tractors used on road have license plates, registration but cost a lot less than fancy car plates--MOT/Ministry of Transport would see maker name and it would be on list of tractor makers so give cheap plates. Lancia had some agricultural implement, maybe special tractor for vinyards-- but that was after the trucks and sedans, sporty sedans already made. Fiat tractors, Renaults were like Fords- agriculture tractors were after the car and trucks made a few years so the Gordini and Abarth hot rod variations might be considered after tractors made. RN

Today's Featured Article - The Day Mom Drove the 8N - by Brian Browning. My Dad was wanting to put in a garden but couldn't operate the 8N and handle the old horse drawn plow he had found and rigged up to use with the tractor. Well, he decided to go get Mom out of the house and have her drive the tractor while he walked behind the plow. You got to understand that while my Mom is a hard worker who will always help whenever she can... she had never operated farm machinery before that day. Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o ... [Read Article]
