It's been very icy up here the last few days after some freezing rain, I took a good spill yesterday and of course I didn't have any of my slip-on ice grippers on my shoes. I have several different types with varying designs to grip the ice.
The best ones I find for sheer ice are the ones which seem to be the simplest ........ those being the ones with small pins protruding from the sole. They almost look like 3/16" short stub ends of finishing nails sticking out of the rubber sole of the gripper. Mine have only four at the front and another two at the back. They sure do work well on ice.
Other designs I have don't seem to do the job on sheer ice nearly as well. These would include what appear to be small hex- shaped studs and also another kind with springs stretched in various directions across the bottom. These might be better in hard-packed snow I think. I know there are other more aggressive kinds with some pretty serious mountain-climbing type cleats which I have never used.

At one time I had seven restored examples which were shown and used in ploughing matches. As most restorers, I have a number of war stories I can relate on a range of topics that may help other like minded and interested people. Perhaps my first p
