We have used both. They work fine. I just don't think they last as long as the heaters that are in the cylinder block. We have had to change the hose heaters about every 5-10 years and I have block heaters that have been in close to 20 years. The hose heaters do require that you have a certain degree of angle for convection current flow of coolant and be unplugged before starting if you read the directions for installation. Now don't need no stinking directions.
