Classmate of mine in college was an electrical engineering major, non farm background. Married a farm girl after he graduated, got a job in engineering, all was good. Within a year, her dad died, so Steve (at everyone's urging) took over the farm (she was an only child). Almost 50 years later, he is one of the most successful farmers in the Kittitas Valley in eastern Washington. Mostly timothy and alfalfa hay for export, plus other crops. Saw him about 20 years ago, he said he's very happy with how his life turned out. His 2 boys have taken over the operation, plenty of acreage for them both to make a good living at it.
