I think some people get a price stuck in their head and just can't give up on what they think an item is worth, no matter how ridiculous. People say, "Well, it was worth X dollars 10 years ago, so it's gotta be worth more now" -- even when market prices may have taken a dive (e.g., Ford N tractors). I see this a lot at gun shows -- same guns at show after show, year after year, never getting sold. Also, someone sees a vaguely similar item at a high price, so mine must be worth that, too. My late father had a run-of-the-mill 1963 Impala that he was sure was worth much more than it actually was because he had seen '63 Super Sports at high prices. Then there are those who are absolutely sure they will restore an item some day and can't bear to part with it at a reasonable price, even though the restoration will never happen. And, of course, some folks don't really want to sell the item, but if a sucker comes along, well....
