Living down south (east Tx) we don't have as much of a problem with skin cracking from cold and dryness. I do find my skin is dryer during the winter than during spring and summer. I have used many brands of hand lotion and found the cheap stuff (Dollar General's brand - "Family Dollar) works as well as the more expensive stuff.
I do have trouble with the cuticles around my fingernails getting dry and hard. If I make sure to apply lotion around my cuticles, the problem goes away. I do have to remember to do it frequently.
For those of you up north, I would suggest putting lotion dispensers in multiple locations and use frequently during the day and a good application well rubbed in before bed.
I have also heard of before going to bed, apply petroleum jelly to your hands, then wear a pair of cotton gloves. I've never tried this.
