The purpose of bonding the hot and cold lines is to prevent electrocution by making sure the hot water plumbing is grounded. Otherwise it's possible for the plumbing to be shorted to a hot conductor without throwing the circuit breaker. Of course, this only applies to copper or steel plumbing.
Bonding is unlikely to make the heater last much longer, since the plumbing is electrically isolated from the heater tank by dielectric couplings.
For those who don't like to change out anodes (and who does?), you can buy "powered anodes" that use electric current to counteract galvanic corrosion.
