About ten years ago my in-laws replaced the original water heater that had been installed in their house sometime in the late 50's or early 60's. It is the house my FIL grew up in and he can't remember exactly when they got hot water. It was one of the old-fashioned kinds (obviously!) that had the heating coils around the exterior of the tank instead of actually in the water. Great for longevity but probably very inefficient and slow recovery time compared to modern designs. Their naturally soft well water probably helps too. I had never heard of a water heater lasting anywhere near this long.
