We in Michigan often feel that the urban left in Wayne County (Detroit) has dominated our politics as well, with some change of late as the population there vanished. A few other large, urban areas (Flint, Lansing) still have the clout. It doesn't help much when we repeatedly send a drunken monkey to Washington whose only redeeming asset is his swimsuit-model niece.
The Upper Peninsula used to have a more fervent cessesion factor, have not heard from them in some years. I think their best bet would be to leave the United States altogether and strike out on their own, with limited access at the Bridge and the Soo. Yes, there is the border with Wisconsin that could be walled off, but really, it's Wisconsin. It's like going to Czechoslovakia.
