Starting in 1949 Sheppard built a 1,2,and 3 cylinder tractor. Not many 1 cyls. built, the SD-2,and SD-3 had Sheppard Engines with Detroit Timken drives. They also, built the 6M conversion,a 3 cylinder engine for Farmall M's. In the mid 50's,they built the SD-4,their own engine and drives. Sheppards weren't big sellers for several reasons. They weren't cheap, and no dealer floor plan. All tractors had to be paid before they left Hanover. Also, they just weren't powerful.None ever Nebraska tested. They supposedly sent a SD-4 to Nebraske, but withdrew it from the testing because it wouldn't make the hp,they wanted to advertise. Sheppards had 22.to 1 compression ratio with squirt gun injection pressures,we now know that's not how to make hp in diesels. Their main claim was they were the first direct start diesel tractor.
