The three different communities I've worked in have seen progress. They no longer burn off the crop residue after harvest as the did for generations, but incorporate it back into the soil. They are now doing crop rotation including legumes in the rotation to fix nitrogen in the soil. They are introducing measures to control erosion which is a huge problem in their mountainous terrain. We have worked with the research farms to breed better varieties for their geography. And we work with their university (with ties to Missouri State University) to train scientists and farmers in best practices in agriculture. Yes it is a challenge to get people off welfare - there and here. Being a farmer who brags that we feed the world, starvation and malnutrition trips my trigger. I think it is unacceptable to look away. I don't apologize for being passionate.
