That the lifting AND lowering became slow does sound like ice.
Those are known for collecting water in the sump. It gets in around the shifter boots, the draft link, and condensation.
The jerky lifting is from the pump failing to deliver on all 3 cylinders. Could have been from frozen valves. Hopefully nothing was damaged, and once thawed it will work again.
If you can get some heat on the underside, before starting it again, crack the drain plugs, see if any liquid water will come out. At the same time look at the oil, it will likely be thick, brown, emulsified with water. If so, it will need to be changed when practical.
I think that model does have a filter. There were several different pumps used through the years, some do, some don't. It is accessed through the round covers below the seat. If it is not collapsed, it can be cleaned.
