Most of the time they go for about $.50 a gallon around here. The trouble is 500 gallon tanks are getting small for most users here. So they will usually bring less at an auction. Maybe a dime a gallon. Now private sales still will bring more. So I would advertise it for $350-400 and be ready to deal if the buyer is serious.
In the great state of New Jersey what are the laws on fuel storage???? IF they are just the Federal ones your 500 gallon tank is fine. If they are more stringent then you may have to have containment for a 500 gallon tank.
I know we have to have containment on our fuel and oil tanks. They count all flammable liquids on the place and if your over a set gallon limit you have to have containment systems. This count includes bulk oil in barrels and such. IRC the threshold is 1100 gallons at the national level. Many states require it at lower amounts.
