The Nest setup mentioned above is pretty nice. One thing to keep in mind is that you will need a good high-speed internet connection for it to work well.
I have some relatives that have a Nest system in a vacation home not far from me with only "sort of high-speed internet". I have gone up there to check on the place and the relatives sometimes only get the notice with a pretty good delay. The speaker and microphone delays make an actual conversation nearly impossible.
