Pre-ignition the flame front travels at normal speeds and the pressure rise is slow. Detonation the ignition is silmultaneous throughout cylinder and the pressure rise is incredibly fast.
I think I remember one case we looked at the vibrations in the engine were triggering the detonation. If I remember right any time the whole charge in cylinder is above pressure / temp / ratio for auto ignition the slightest things will induce it to start.
