Those are more of a screen than an actual filter. What I do is just clean them. Remove the suction line from the pump and fill it with lacquer thinner. Then blow the thinner out with a blow gun. Wrap tape around the blow gun to get a good seal. Do that a couple of times and it should clean it pretty well. Of course you want to drain the rear end before you do this. Then flush it out afterwards with diesel fuel. Leroy, 4000s had the same kind of filter/screen on the suction side. And yes, in those you had to remove the lift cover to do anything with them.
