Michelin warns you on their web site that the tires on the explorer are...TOO WIDE for the weight of that vehicle and therefore not rated for mud, snow or ice.
There is a formula for the weight vrs foot print of the tire. And when tires get too wide, they loose traction on slippery surfaces quicker. When tires get too thin, they sink and dig holes. There is a sweet spot for tires sizing.. especially if your going for a "touring" tire and long millage, quiet ride and low rolling resistance.
