How do you figure it would be safer, all one has to do is place support under first throw, put the driver over end of crank and press gear back on, This way your not stressing the crank shaft. Your applying straight even pressure, instead of sharp blows with hammer or other device to drive the gear back on. Now why would I do all this work to re-install gear when I have a press sitting here to do the work the proper way, and not putting stress fractures in the crankshaft by beating on the end of it..
Besides John Deere shop manual calls for it to be pressed back on, since I have the tools, I guess I will press it back on like manual says.
