Tire chains that can't roll will wear in one spot and can loose their bite, but in following years the chains can be installed with the opposite side out for a second wear side. The ring tire chains and the twisted link chains are more expensive, but they seem to wear evenly and IMHO have improved bite on ice because the links are higher than the tire lugs.
