What are you going to do when YOU need to take the grain in to the elevator when it is full of paper? Around here the elevator would reject it most likely. You can't count on people being honorable anymore so might just as well have as much as possible in view of the house and in the case of grain that has to be off the farm have it at the mill with a basis contract. The local elevator will roll the contract over for several cents per bushel if you do not like the price during the initial contract period. Yes, you loose a little bit of control but at least you have something saying it is yours. Elevators pull shenanigans but I've never had one play games on the basis. If you feel the elevator is abusing your trust then it is time to be thinking about adding storage at your place for next year.
