the only way it will start by jumping the positive battery cable on starter to the S terminal is if you preheated the glow plugs first from sitting in the seat then got off and jumped the starter quickly. i know as i have done this a few times on my 560 because the soleniod plunger and spring is sticky. it will just click with the start button but when you jump off and jump it it starts right up. and yes i make sure its out of gear. if you just walked up to it and jumped the starter it would turn over and smoke but not start. glow plugs must actually be held while cranking also and even once started till smoke clears.
