Back when I first got my drivers license, my dad insisted I have liability insurance, long before it was the law.
He fixed me up with his agent, I bought the insurance, stayed with them for years.
Somewhere along the line the agent died, his son took over the business.
I knew his son. Nothing about him was legit, into drinking, drugs, a real mess. But the business continued, we all just assumed it was being handled.
Come to find out, the son was pocketing ALL the money, no policies were in effect. Thank God we didn't have a claim!
I don't know what happened with those that did have claims. The agency closed, the son went to prison for multiple reasons, assuming the insurance scam was one of them.
