I have three young (8-5 months old) hens that have a soar leg. They will put some weight on it but still hobble around. I segregated two of them and put a couple of aspirin in their water. I don't notice anything visibly wrong with the legs. They move their toes and push against my hand with the foot. I have my highest roost at 48" with a plank going down at an angle from the roost with gutter screen stapled to it for traction. I wouldn't think the roost is too high as I never had a problem before, even with them in the rafters at my parent's place. Also my old hens (5 years or so old) don't have any problems. I had to put two young pullets down a couple months ago because they got worse.
