At the start of the off season, I fully charge each battery then disconnect the ground cable (often with a quick disconnect). Re-check battery voltages every month or two and recharge as needed. Remove those batteries that are not close enough to an electric outlet that they can be recharged. Batteries seem to last several years longer if they don't get fully discharged and don't freeze.
