Unless this is a high-performance, high-speed road machine/race car, there's a product out there that does a pretty good job of cleaning gear oil and/or brake fluid off of brake shoes.
AMAZINGLY, it's called "Brakeleen". Several cans of it should do the job @ under five bucks a can.
CAREFUL, though, if you live in Cali, the good stuff causes cancer there.
