The 9N/2N tractors use a cutout relay. The 8N has a regulator. Tractors with only the cutout relay can benefit from the 8v battery by just swapping the battery (the generator's third brush position may need adjustment). Tractors with a regulator would need the regulator adjusted. The higher voltage will increase the cranking speed. It will also improve the spark by increasing (by 1/3) the current through the coil -- the coil should be able to take this, if not, you'll end up replacing the coil and changing the ballast resistor.
The higher voltage will dramatically decrease the life of any lights on the tractor.
