From some reading I did long ago, the color used to be yellow / red. Almost l8ke we have very lite green and dark green. Rock moss green is very dark, then hunter green lawn green teal etc. Today in Japanese culture they have one that is an old traditional color that we call vermillion. Very very bright red just on the verge of going orange. It is used on a lot of temples and shrines.
