I pretty much agree with what you said. Having said that I do wonder in some cases what the coming of age generation knows when it comes to things such as agronomy or animal husbandry. Maybe their elders were quite capable in these disciplines or maybe there was a lack of knowledge that in turn is holding the farm back. When I talk of gut checks I speak in terms of analyzing what is going on in home compared with what is going on in the community. Does dad or grandpa talk like the more successful farmers when speaking about animals or crops? Does the head of the family take issue when his methods are compared to others? Can a younger person see when something is plainly wrong without a degree to help assess a problem? That if a field has a serious problem with drainage that in turn will limit the potential of a crop. Especially if the neighbor's field managed with similar techniques and similar soils but no issue with drainage produces a far superior crop.
