My answer only applies if it is gas: But it sounds like it tries to start and does start until you let off the start position.
Most gas tractors have a start circuit for the points that is hotter than the run ignition circuit for easier starting. Tractor starts using that hot circuit key start but dies when you let off the key and the switch changes to the run circuit.
Problem could be the ignition switch, ballast resistor, resistor wire in the run circuit. It is possible to troubleshoot this by running a hot wire to the coil for troubleshooting.
