I'm using a DB990 for bailing right now. I'm running an ancient Hesston 5500 5x5 twine tie baler making dry hay. Or, as dry as we can get it this year. This is the first year I've had any issues pulling that baler and it's all related to the soft ground and trying to beat the rain, ie- you can definitely push a tired old tractor that really needs an overhaul too hard! In a normal year, it has no problems at all making a 5x5 bale and doing it going up and down slopes. The hydraulic pump IS driven by the tranny on my approx 1968 model. Step all the way down on the 2 stage clutch and hydraulics stop as well as the PTO. That doesn't really bother me. Others it might.
Personally, I think DB made excellent tractors. The design and engineering are definitely British, but it's not like they're made in some eastern European communist workers paradise. I'd buy a more DB's if I could. A 1410 would be the cats!
