I have found that the markings for construction zones varies from state to state. I have also found that not all are what I would call "well marked." As to how truckers are paid, pay has been by the mile for over the road drivers for almost as long as there have been trucks. Extra pat for extra work. Like loading/unloading pays the driver more. Drop and hook even gets the driver a few bucks beyond straight mileage pay. Local drivers generally get paid by the hour or by the trip. So, overall, pay by the mile is not a contributing factor as I see it. BTW, I drove over the road for about 12 years, and ran local/regional for another 8 years before I retired from it. So, I do speak from experience.
