One of the problems with them and perch is how they feed. On occasion I have gone out at night with a flashlight and caught them right on the spillway, where the water was only a couple of inches deep, lined up, heads toward the incoming water feeding. Thus the vulnerability.
Numerous times after a big rain I'd go out in the pasture, pick up the fry and put them back in. If you do it while the water is still running after a heavy rain, you can save most that you can find and catch....they do a good job of hiding so you have to move your scoop around to coax them out of hiding.
