My cummins has 3.55 gears in it and thus ran consistantly higher mpgs, especially empty... however it was rated to pull 13,500lbs of trailer, and computer controlled fueled accordingly... and believe me,, when you exceeded that, you ran out of power. As I could get 19mpg easily,, and up to 21 mpg if I really milked it and keep it below 68 mph... With a tow chip it did perform better, but again, would still not pull big loads... and forget stopping..
I do agree there is a huge difference between 2001 models and 2013 models... so much that you cant believe the difference..
I wonder if the dodge had a 4:10 rear end, would it have done better pulling. And the ford has two over drive gears in it to compensate for the 4:10 ratio..
