Agreed, and they're also probably using that terminology to differentiate it from the Snowmobile-like "automatic" variable speed belt drives seen in Polaris and other ATV's. I've had some experience using and wrenching on the Chinese ATV's but mostly the smaller kid-sized ones. They've been EXTREMELY lightly and cheaply built, and parts have been difficult to come by, with the part sources expensive, slow and unreliable when you do find them. Granting these were purchased as cheap kid yard beaters, but even then it was evident that use in difficult terrain would cause serious breakages very quickly.
