Maybe so , but when they were first issued you could not count on them and in the bush you did not always hit what you aimed at . It did not take much to deflect the 55 grain round . SO for us most of my group we carried what Charlie carried and resupply was easier . I carried and AK 47 for 11 months and yes they are not good for range but they worked vary well in the bush , for the long shot what was in the bag was the tool for that . the only time i took a M16 into a fire fight was the second night of Tet in 68 and was forced to TRADE IT OFF for a almost brand new AK due to the fact it junked out .
