That's the way they work - they always smell like burning plastic before they burn out. Problem is, it can start smelling a couple weeks before it finally burns out!
We've found that if we want the bulbs to last the longest, to not turn them off - just leave them on all the time. That said, we're slowly switching to LED light sources.
