WalMart did not get to where they did by writing big checks to everyone who worked for them. I never got the love for old Sam as from what I have seen written he was pretty much the same way when it came to paying labor. He was no different than Bill Gates or any other modern era CEO in that he had to offer more in terms of benefits when he could not match the going rate based on the skill set of the employee during the companies growth era. If you had the good fortune to work for WalMart during the 1970's you most likely got part of your compensation via stock. In the case of Walmart and Microsoft this amounted to millions when these same employees hit the early mark age wise for retirement specifically early to mid 50's age-wise. In current times unless you are in the top layer of management or have a very rare skill set you are not destined for a fat retirement via WalMart unless you managed your own investments.
