Well, I hate to own up to this one but.... I wasn't finding any easy answers so I went back out and started staring at it. You can almost see down to the bottom where the linkage ends. Didn't look right. On the outside there is a plastic cover under there, must be for protection. I got it almost off. It was packed with possibly 30 years worth of junk. 8 ball point pens, bolts, cotter pins, hairpin clips, dirt, you name it, even 2 knobs that I thought were lost! There is a small slot in the bottom of the plastic, but once it plugs, things just pile up. (I may post a picture) Shifts like new! I love these kind of fixes. Lately I post a lot about this machine. Every fix makes it a little nicer to work with. I'm beginning to like it! Now, on to the 3pth arms not lowering. Thanks for the continued help, what a great forum!
