My dad was on Umnak, Coast Artillery Anti-Aircraft. Was boarding a ship on the way to the Philippines and Corregidor-Battaan when he got orders to take his men and head for Alaska to support that invasion. No doubt missing that shipment and what the men that went endured was everlasting on his mind. Not one day did that man go to bed nor get out without getting on one knee and thanking his master.
