According to my Dad, it was quite a show. My uncle was a spearhead on Normandy. He survived the landing on Omaha, but was injured at St Lo on the 16th, and died on the 19th. He is buried at Colville St. Mer.
Dad landed shortly after the main invasion and got a tour across northern Europe into Germany. He was a combat engineer and built advanced airbases for fighter aircraft as they advanced. He had been wonded in N. Africa in 1943, sent home and made a 90 day wonder, shipped back to England and landed on Normandy two weeks later as a shavetail. He never talked about his experiences too much, as they were not always pretty. D Day was a stepping off point for many a kid that turned them into men.....
