We use large cranes at work a fair amount and they are always permit loads even for a smaller 100 ton crane. The cranes are mostly just heavy and don't travel real fast some of the bigger 2-300 ton ones are wide as well as heavy. In PA they can only travel in daylight and have to follow the specific route given with the permit. They get run around the country side following those permit routes. I guess they figure it's cheaper to run the route than to get caught offroute.
