Lots of good advice, listen to the negative as well as the positive. The financial advisors all want to scare you into working longer so they can make more off you. If you have enough then they start talking about "legacy" - make you think you are a rich man with a legacy to pass along. Leaving your kids a bunch of money is ill advised: if they need it, it won't be enough, they'll still be spendthrifts. If they don't need it, then what is the point? That's what I told my dad, I don't need it so enjoy it.
Frugal people who saved all their life tend to figure out how to live within their means and they don't need their savings. Spenders can't control it and will burn through their savings and then whine it was somebody else' fault. I don't need my savings but am glad I've got it. But I just can't bring myself to withdraw any and spend it. It two years I have to withdraw but don't have to spend it.
I think it all boils down to whether you are a spender or saver. If you're a saver you'll be OK on about any income. Medicare has been great for my wife and I, and she has had brain cancer. We carry a supplemental health policy and never have to pay much at all. There are always the 2% who get annihilated by health issues but you can't save for that.
People on this forum tend to be savers and also have hobbies that are at least revenue neutral - you can sell enough to finance your habit. If your hobby is snow skiing, golf, or travel then you can't earn anything to help defray the costs of the hobby.
