I went through trying to determine that with a retirement adviser. Sit down and start adding up what you now spend every month. Give yourself some time to remember everything like publications, things that only happen yearly, hair cuts, figure on some vehicle repairs, insurance, etc. Decide what you are currently spending money on that you won't need any more once retired. Give some thoughts to hobbies you may want to start doing. You'll be able to get a good idea on how much you might spend. Then make some adjustments for unknowns and figure in the taxes for your area. You probably won't come up with an exact number but you should be able to get into the ball park. My wife and I together make about $100,000 before any deductions and came up with a number around $65,000 for retirement. Like you we aren't planning on travel costs and big spending items but part of my cost was continuing to pay off a mortgage and I budgeted for a car payment. I hope to have neither when I actually retire. I also live in New York State and added a lot for taxes.
