I installed a 20 KW whole house propane fueled back up generator a couple of years ago. It ran for over 20 hours the first summer after I had installed it when a large oak tree fell over and took down a 17+ KV line about 1/4 mile from my place. The snapped off two of the 60' wooden poles and pulled the cross arms off of two more. The poles carried the local service beneath the high capacity lines above so everyone around was without power for hours.
I also use a 7500W portable generator to provide power away from the buildings. It fits nicely into the carryall on the back of one of my 8Nsand is handy to power my electric pole saw when I trim limbs from trees away from the buildings.
I bought the portable genset for $550 from HF and the electric pole saw for around $100 from NT. The combination is not much more expensive and much more versatile than a good Stihl gasoline powered pole saw.
