On that issue I would look for bearing issues in it. Some times the rotor scores the field. The impulse and spring will cause similar issues. Also rusty and corroded parts inside. Might be worth sending out to have it rebuilt if you are not comfortable doing it. If you have another tractor you can shift them and test them to see if it is the problem. There are distributors that fit most of them if you have a battery (electric start) its an option. I really doubt you have a dead magnet.
