Part is planned obsolescence but a large part is if it sells. Each part has to have enough volume of sales to make it worthwhile to produce. Not like they can run off 1000 or something and let it sit on a shelf while they sell 10 or so year. Just isn't profitable. And making a part and selling it a loss is a sure way to tank a company. Just how many sets of points do you think they sell each year when you got guys bragging about getting 10 years out of a set? So they either stop making them or outsource the production.
