Add everything up and it's about $2 per hundred of net worth per year around here for non ag taxes. For you guys up N. with 10k per acre corn land (we're getting close where I live; selling fast in 10-50 ac chunks for $6800 per for nothing special and going up daily) that's $200 per acre savings having it in ag./year.
So if you are a 100 acre farm (million dollar net worth with $20k annual liability) and have 25 cows, if my mental math is correct you're paying yourself $800 per cow not counting what you make off her. Drop a calf every ll -12 months (my Brangus were regular at that) and sell it for $1k at yearling age or slightly below, (600#, $1.50-1.75 a # for grade 9-12 mo. calf around here), you are at $1800 or so per animal gross income per year. Not bad if you ask me. You can afford a couple of bales of hay and a few tons of fertilizer I'd think.
